Vulnerability to HIV infection continues to grow among adolescents and young people. This is particularly true for girls in sub-Saharan Africa who face a higher risk than do boys in the same areas. Globally, for this same poplulation, there is higher risk for HIV through sexual transmission and injecting drug use. In great part due to this reality, the World Health Organization is creating new guidelines and a policy brief on HIV testing and counseling, treatment and care for adolescents with with HIV. There were 35.3 million people living with HIV in 2012. 2.1 million adolescents were living with HIV. At the end of 2012, 9.7 million people in low- and middle-income countries were receiving antiretroviral therapy.
